Configure Automatic Logon for Windows 7+

Note: This KB/SOP assumes a well founded understanding on use and foibles of the Microsoft Windows Registry Editor!!! Proceed with caution or obtain qualified assistance.

  1. Run RegEdit
  2. Optional but recommended: Backup the registry to \Temp
  3. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

  4. Open or create* registry item DefaultUserName and enter the desired username, clicking OK to save.
  5. Open or create* registry item DefaultPassword and enter the corresponding password, clicking OK to save.
  6. If a domain computer, open or create* registry item DefaultDomain and enter the corresponding domain name**, clicking OK to save.
  7. Open or create* registry item AutoAdminLogon and enter "1" (sans quotes), clicking OK to save.

  8. Exit RegEdit and restart the computer.

    * All the above items are of the "string value" type. This includes "AutoAdminLogon".
    ** A "short" domain name (sometimes referred to as the Windows 2000 domain name) should suffice. However, the Microsoft Knowledge Base Article KB324737 states an FQDN should be used.
